Insurance Agents Hiring Checklist — What to Ask Before You Hire

Use this checklist before hiring an insurance agent. Covers vetting, quotes, licensing, and contract questions.

Hiring an insurance agent is like hiring a mechanic — you want someone who actually fixes things, not someone who just talks about fixing things. Most people pick the first name off a Google search or a referral from a relative. That's a mistake. Here's how to do it right.

Before You Search

Know what you need before you talk to anyone. Are you buying life insurance, home insurance, or commercial liability? Each type requires a different license and a different kind of expertise. A guy who sells car policies all day is not the person to handle your small business coverage. Write down your biggest risk — fire, lawsuit, death, disability — and what you're willing to pay to protect against it. That's your starting point.

Vetting Candidates

Ask for three referrals from people who have actually filed a claim with that agent. Not just people who bought a policy. Claims are where the rubber meets the road. Then check the state insurance department website for complaints and license status. That takes five minutes. If you see a pattern of unresolved complaints, move on. Also ask how long they've been in business. New agents can be great, but they don't have the relationships with underwriters that a ten-year veteran has. You want someone who can pick up the phone and get a problem solved.

Getting Quotes

Get quotes from at least three different agencies. Don't just compare the premium — compare the coverage limits, deductibles, and exclusions. A cheap policy that doesn't cover your biggest risk is a waste of money. Ask each agent to explain one thing that's not covered. If they can't answer clearly, that's a red flag. Also ask how they get paid. Commission-only agents might push products that pay them more. Fee-based agents charge a flat rate and rebate commissions. Neither is evil, but you should know which one you're dealing with.

Before You Sign

Read the declarations page. That's the first page of the policy that lists your name, the coverage amounts, and the premium. Make sure everything matches what you discussed. Then ask the agent to walk you through the claims process step by step. If they hesitate or give vague answers, that's a bad sign. Finally, get everything in writing — the quote, the policy terms, and any promises about service. Verbal promises are worthless when something goes wrong.
