Red Flags When Hiring a Painter

Protect yourself from bad hires. These are the red flags to watch for when hiring a painter.

You're about to hand over money to someone with a roller. Get this wrong and you'll pay twice — once for the mess, once to fix it. Here's what to watch for so you don't get burned.

Red Flags in Quotes

If a quote is way lower than everyone else, run. That's the 'I'll cut corners, use thin paint, and rush the job' price. Vague line items are another warning. 'Preparation and materials' doesn't tell you if they'll spackle holes or just paint over them. A real quote spells out how many coats, what brand, and which surfaces get prepped. No detail means no accountability.

Red Flags in Communication

Slow replies or missed estimate appointments tell you everything about their work ethic. If they can't be bothered to show up for the free quote, imagine how they'll handle a complaint. Also watch for vague timelines. 'We'll get to it when we can' means your job sits at the bottom of the pile. A pro gives a start date and a rough finish date.

Red Flags in Contracts

No contract is the biggest red flag. Even a handshake deal is a trap. The contract must list the scope — which rooms, which walls, trim or not, prep work, cleanup. Payment terms should never be 100% upfront. Half now, half on completion is standard. Walk away if they demand full payment before starting. Also look for a warranty clause. One year minimum on workmanship and materials.

How to Protect Yourself

Get three quotes minimum. Don't just pick the cheapest — pick the one who answers questions clearly and shows up on time. Check recent references, not ones from five years ago. Ask for proof of insurance. General liability and workers' comp aren't optional. Hold back the final payment until you've inspected the work in daylight. Touch-ups should be included in the price.
