Window Cleaning Hiring Checklist — What to Ask Before You Hire

Use this checklist before hiring a window cleaner. Covers vetting, quotes, licensing, and contract questions.

Most people wait until their windows look like a foggy mess before calling someone. That's when you're most likely to overpay or hire the first name you find. A little legwork upfront saves you money and a headache.

Before You Search

Figure out what you actually need. Inside only? Outside only? Screens and tracks? Second-story windows? If you have specialty glass — tinted, tempered, or old wavy panes — mention that now. Don't waste your time or theirs. Also check your own schedule. Most good crews work in blocks, so if you need a Tuesday at 3 p.m. sharp, you might be waiting a while.

Vetting Candidates

Ask for proof of insurance. Not a photo of a certificate — a current policy number you can verify. If they hesitate, move on. Check if they use water-fed poles or ladders. Poles are safer for your property and their backs. Look for someone who has been in business at least two years. New guys can be fine, but you don't want to be their training window. Read recent reviews, not the five-star ones from three years ago.

Getting Quotes

Get at least three quotes. Not five, not ten — three. Any more and you'll confuse yourself. Quotes should be based on number of panes, not square footage. A pro will count windows on the spot. If they quote you over the phone without seeing the place, that's a red flag. Ask what's included. Some quotes cover sills and frames, some don't. Some charge extra for hard water stains. Get it in writing.

Before You Sign

Read the fine print on cancellation and rescheduling. Some companies charge a fee if you cancel inside 24 hours. That's fair. Others want a contract for monthly service. That's fine if you want it, but don't lock yourself in for a year after one clean. Ask about their guarantee. If a window streaks, do they come back for free? Most good ones will. If they dodge the question, walk.
