Tree Services Hiring Checklist — What to Ask Before You Hire

Use this checklist before hiring a tree service pro. Covers vetting, quotes, licensing, and contract questions.

Tree work is dangerous and expensive. Most people call the first ad they see and regret it. Here's how to avoid that.

Before You Search

Figure out exactly what you need before picking up the phone. Is a branch just hanging or is the whole tree leaning toward your house? If it's an emergency, call someone who can show up today. If not, slow down. Look at your property and decide: trimming, removal, stump grinding, or just cleanup? The more specific you are, the harder it is for someone to upsell you later.

Vetting Candidates

Don't hire a guy with a pickup and a chainsaw who knocks on your door after a storm. Real tree services carry liability insurance and workers' comp. Ask for proof. Call their insurance agent to verify. Also ask for local references — not just the three happy customers they hand you. Look for someone who has been in business at least a few years. Experience matters when you're dealing with things that can crush a house.

Getting Quotes

Get at least three written quotes. Don't go with the cheapest one unless you want shortcuts. A good quote breaks down the work: what they'll cut, how they'll remove it, what happens to the debris. Ask if stump grinding is included or costs extra. Ask about cleanup. A sloppy crew leaves your yard looking worse than before. And don't let them talk you into a quote over the phone — they need to see the tree.

Before You Sign

Read the contract like it's your money on the line — because it is. Look for a clear scope of work, a payment schedule, and a timeline. Never pay the full amount upfront. A small deposit is normal, half or more is a red flag. Make sure the contract says they'll repair any damage to your property. And if they sub out the stump grinding to another guy, that guy better be insured too.
