Hiring a vet isn't like hiring a plumber. You're trusting someone with a living creature that can't speak for itself. Get this wrong and you'll pay in stress, money, and guilt.
Before You Search
Figure out what kind of care you actually need. Routine checkups and vaccines? Emergency surgery? Livestock work? That changes who you look for. Talk to three other practice owners in your area first. Ask what they'd do different. Most will tell you they hired too fast or paid too much for a fancy degree that didn't match the workload.
Vetting Candidates
Ignore the resume buzzwords. Look for someone who can explain a diagnosis to a scared owner without jargon. That's the skill that keeps clients coming back. Call their references but skip the listed ones. Ask the receptionist at their last clinic what they were really like to work with. You'd be surprised how honest a tired front desk person gets after five minutes.
Getting Quotes
Don't ask for a flat fee. Ask for a salary range and a production bonus structure. Watch how they react when you bring up after-hours calls. A candidate who hesitates or asks for extra pay on every weekend shift will bleed your schedule dry. Get their expected hours in writing. Verbal agreements vanish the second they're tired.
Before You Sign
Nail down the non-compete clause. Bad ones can lock you out of hiring another vet within your county for two years. Have a lawyer read it. Also set a 90-day probation period with clear review milestones. If they're rude to one client or one tech in month two, cut the cord. That behavior won't fix itself.
